Kxine 0.5
=========

A simple multimedia player for KDE, based on xine.

xine: http://xine.sourceforge.net/
KDE: http://www.kde.org/

kxine: http://kxine.sourceforge.net/

Why?
----

Yes, I know there are at least three other KDE video players out there (kaboodle,
noatun and aktion spring to mind). No offense intended to the developers, but they
appear to be concentrating their efforts into things like embedding the movie player
as a KPart into Konqueror (!), rather than making their video players better.

I like xine. It plays all my video files and DVDs without hassle. The only thing
I don't like is the various skins---I prefer my programs to all have my KDE theme
(if you use mosfet's liquid, then you'll know what I mean ;-).

So I decided to write kxine. Following the UNIX philosophy of "do one thing and do
it well", kxine is going to be a kde interface to xine, and it's going to do it well.

Note
----

Because I am now in my final year at university, I have to concentrate on my work and
my individual project. This means I won't be doing any major Kxine work for the
forseeable future. You are entirely welcome to continue development: I'll accept
any good patches, and if you're really good, you can have CVS access :-)

Installation
------------

If you checked this out of cvs, then you should run ./cvscompile.sh before the
following.

Otherwise, it should be as simple as:

   ./configure
   make
   make install

You may need to be root for that last step. Or, if you want to install to another
place, e.g. your home directory, add `--prefix=/path/to/dir' to the configure line.

On some distro's, it has been noticed that it only works properly if installed to
the same prefix as KDE itself. That's a bit lame, I know, but on my SuSE box, I
have to use ./configure --prefix=/opt/kde3

Hacking
-------

If you want to hack on kxine, there's a list of things to do in the TODO file.
